Hey there anemone keepers/breeders I was wondering what you all are using to contain your anemones if you don't want them to free roam your tank. I have always liked anemones but, I have avoided them because I don't want them trampling my other corals. I plan on doing harem tank in the future just specifically so I can keep anemones and clowns which I don't want tearing up my current systems. This all said I won an anemone in a raffle a few weeks ago and I'm thinking "hey cool a free nem". So, I figured what the heck I will just throw him in an acclimation box for safe keeping and when I set up my harem tank I will have a few nems ready to go. This worked out ok for a few weeks then I ran into the issue of lack of flow in the box and the inability of snails to get into the box, the container was quickly overrun with algae. So I then bought a 3D printed NemBox which is basically a basket with 1/8" netting. Within an hour the nem climbed through the basket.

So what gives? I see other people with nems in baskets all of the time. What's the trick? Am I just using the wrong basket? Is everyone else just catching their nem and throwing him back in the basket every day?

Any advise is much appreciated since I really would like to keep this guy. He isn't anything super fancy or rare, just a really pretty rainbow bubble tip. I am also not opposed to giving him away and waiting for the next one but I really would prefer to keep him.

I keep mine in an acclimation container on the side, but it can really only hold like 5 BTAs at best and they are SQUISHED.

I know @bakbay has a nice basket he uses but not sure where he got his

I added some pictures of what I have. Obviously this is not going to work I blew water at his foot with a baster to get him to let go of the glass. Now I just gotta wait for him to figure out which side of the net he wants to be on. Then it will be back into the acclimation box for him.

Do you keep snail's in there as well to help with the algae?

This is what I use & do. The basket is mounted on the top of the tank, secured by Tunze magnets. The top part of the basket is not submerged in the water hence nems don’t/can’t climb out.

I frag Sang Lee Colorado’s and Shak Daddy Chicago’s. I keep them separate in their own baskets so I won’t mix them up by accident, although I can tell them apart. ;)

No snails needed - I can clean the algae with a toothbrush. Sometimes I put a small piece of rock for them to attach and feel safe.

Nice Larry. I will have to look into those. I bet they are more cost effective than the one I bought too....LOL.

How's that little flame angel doing in your big tank? My wife was just asking about him. She calls him Felix just in case you were wondering....LOL

Unfortunately, I lost the little guy due to velvet, which wiped out almost all my fish last year! :(

I made a new video last night — I actually bought all these fish (again). I need to find 3 flame angels to add some reds to the tank…got anymore? lol

Awe, that's too bad he was the only one. I am not sure if I will have another in my next tank or not it depends on weather or not I keep any acans.

Did you have another outbreak? I remember you were purchasing him as a part of the restocking.

Just one outbreak. I was QT’ing and trying to save the rest and I added them to the flame angel in observation. The little guy got infected and I lost them all. It was devastating and I almost gave up on keeping fish, just corals.

Hindsight I should have moved all the “clean” fish to the frag tank but it had 3 large Haddoni’s, underwater death traps, which had a better chance of survival. (Sigh)

I don't do anything special with my baskets. Just let them float around or zip tie some capped pvc to aid in floating if they ever get too heavy.

Dirty? Move the nem to another basket if it wasn't already put into another tank and clean it.

Haven't found issues mixing any variants either in the last 10+ years of collecting either.
