Well I just been given permission to commandeer a spare bedroom and turn it into my fish room. I know that if I left "stuff" all over the lounge I could crack the better half. It has taken a year however she has finally relented. So the end of August, after friends finish visiting the build will begin in earnest. Thinking of a 150 x 55 x 55... and a shallow frag tank along side it...
Wish me luck

Well I have started the buying process. I wanted to get Reefi Uno for the new build but in reality wont be over to the states until next year. Started trolling the net and found 2 Radion XR30 G5 Blues for $800 AUD. I think these should be a nice fit over a 4-5' tank. I also plan on supplementing them with 2 light bars to help reduce shadowing... let the fun times begin

Just toying with the idea of a bare bottom but i am torn..since having wrasses I find them so colorful and full of life I want them in the new setup. would it be feasible to partition off a section of the tank floor with a glass/perspex divider say of 2-3" high and fill it with sand for the wrasses and snails to sleep...I think I know that it would get messed up a bit but I can always vac the tank and refill as required..anyone done this before?

Not quite the same, and in a much smaller tank, but I saw someone put an acrylic cube inside a bare bottom tank filled with sand with a couple inches empty at the top so the sand would sort of stay in (of course some would get out no matter what). I believe he did this for some sand burrowing fish or to place a coral but I forget the details. It looked kinda cool to me but what you’re talking about sounds more cool. I think it could be done but you might get annoyed with the messy look if it’s tough to keep the sand where you want it. Definitely extra maintenance. My vote would be sand in the main tank and of course bare bottom in the frag tank. Looking forward to seeing this all transpire!

I think I would try to find a third XR30 for a tank that length! Better to have and turn down.

just purchased a third xr30 g5..they are still on run out special till the eom...I agree more the merrier and turned down low if needed. I also plan running upto 3 per side of these in lieu of light bars. A friend has them to supplement his xr15s and his corals grow like weeds.

Ok my friends have been and gone so now its open slaver on the new build. These are some before shots of a spare room that is being "remodeled". I have 4 new XR30 G5 and have ordered the tank. Its a Vivaria optic clear low iron 150x55x55. Still deciding whether to go peninsular or regular. My wife doesn't like the idea of the peninsular so it will probably be standard.

Well just had a week on Nusa Lembongan just off Bali's coast. Here the beaches are littered with old coral frames that are left by the local fisherman. picked up quite a few (3 large foam boxes filled with them) and bought them back to create the new aquascape....let the fun begin

Ok after a day and a half we converted the pile of coral rubble into a sort of aquascape..I tried to keep as many nook and crannies as I could. I think there are ample caves. 3 separate bommies with 2 zoa islands. I dont think flow will be an issue as I have what I think is heaps of swimming /flow areas...time will tell. Can anyone see areas for improvement/modifications?

Well its been awhile since I have updated my new build but here it goes. My new Vivaria Optic clear 150x55x55 arrived and the guys placed it on the new custom stand for me. I had a look at the seams and was shocked to find heaps of silicone imperfections. There were bubbles through the seams and not just small bubbles either, long streaks/voids. I spoke to the shop and at first they said it was ok but on my pressing they agreed it wasnt the best and ordered me a new tank..It was great service from Bali Reef Aquariums. Well Done! The second new tank arrived and the seams are much better with only the stray small bubble but imo it should be ok.
The new workbench/ sink has been made and installed along with a new RODI station in the bathroom, or as my wife says the fish wet room. I have a 250ltr and two 80 ltr ro water storage. One I plan on making a ato top container.
Radion XR30 G5 lights have been mounted and ready for the lamp install.

I am a bit stuck as to what overflow to use. I was thinking of getting an acrylic inner box made 40cm long with 2 x 1 1/2 " bulkheads into a 10mm glass box siliconed to the rear of the tank. My reasoning for this is that the inner box can sit flush against the glass and leave no room for vetimid snail to hide.
I am planning to mount the overflow on the RHS side rear wall of the tank so this will allow access for cleaning etc. 3 x 1" bean animal drain system is planned also. My rock scape is cycling in a tub with a few pieces of live rock to try to speed up the cycle.. RODI system done also.
Here are a few pics of the build to date

Yeah they did a great job on it. It is made out of teak so it should hold up to the occasional water on it and I have put a 19mm marine ply top on it also..I initially wanted 80/20 but its hard to find someone that will bore the holes in it. Now I am happy with what I ended up with to the extent I am getting another one made for the sump tht will sit beside the tank..No more stooping down into the sump for me

Well after much deliberation I have elected to go with this ghost overflow. Seem pretty good with a removable and spare weir for cleaning. 2 x 2 1/2 " bulkheads and 3 x 1" drains for a bean animal. Do you think 40cm is long enough for a 150cm tank...It is approx a 1/3 and from what I have read this is kinda where to aim. I was planning on just a inner box with a glass external but picks this

Well my ghost overflow arrived today and to my disappointment it had copped a couple of knocks on the way and the internal box has 2 broken corners. I have lodged a claim through Tokopedia and we wait to see what they come up with. I ordered a second weit as I can swap them over for cleaning...It appears quite a good design.

I plan on drilling it to the side of the rear wall, this will access to the box for maintenance..I think it should be ok, Has anyone mounted it offset previously? Pro and cons?
