Probably a Bobbit Worm. Get it out YESTERDAY! They are REALLY fast and will eat pretty much anything.

Yes, they are a good part of a clean up crew. If you have a lot of them it is an indication of poor maintenance.
 
Personally, any worm over 4 inches has to go. If it is over 7 inches it is definitely not a good type of worm.
