I just got an engineer goby for my 40 gallon that I posted about yesterday, and I’m wondering should I get another one because I just found out that they like to be in pairs. He’s about 1 inch long right now.

My friend, have you researched Engineer Gobies? The one (1) you have will in a relatively short time get 1-2 feet long, and will constantly "engineer" sand tunnels and possibly move rocks in your 40 gallon as it is. I would 'not' recommend a second one unless you will be upgrading to about a 100+ gallon tank when it hits about 9".

I wasn't trying to be a joy-smasher. And 2' is probably a max size in the wild. But someone I knew threw two of them in a 32 gallon bio cube, and they literally started to grow right before his eyes. Lol. I had to help him rehome them into 180 gallon tank. Unfortunately, it was a predator tank, and at 4" we suspect it was the lionfish that ate them.
