Has anyone had issues with the new Nyos Quantum Skimmer Impeller? Don’t know if I should let it break in further.

I had to buy a new pump for my Nyos Quantum 160 skimmer and also bought a new impeller not knowing if the old one has been compromised.

Anyway I have been having issues and it’s created by the impeller. I have contacted Ecotech and they say there is a 2 week break in period for the impeller. It has been 3 weeks now and it seems like I’m still having issues. I thought I had it dialed in but come this morning the tank stand has water on the bottom. I have the skimmer running into a jug.

When I had the old impeller I had the skimmer running in 9.5 inches of water and it was running great. With the new impeller the skimmer was overflowing even with it full open. I even tried working with the air and it just created a lot of bubbles that escaped the skimmer body. So I have raised the skimmer up so now it’s standing in close to 8 inches of water. I now can dial it in but I’m having trouble with it. With the old impeller I could clearly see the line between the water and bubbles but with the new impeller I can’t.

Here is two videos. The first one is showing the skimmer with the old impeller. The second is with the new impeller and the skimmer raised up.

Yes it’s compatible. I even asked Ecotech and they said

“The impeller was updated to ensure the longevity of this specific piece in the skimmer itself as NYos continues to push to ensure higher reliability of their products.”

The only other new thing is the pump. But this is definitely just dealing with the impeller.

But here is a comparison of the pumps.
The first picture is the reason I had to get a new pump. There was a nick/crack in the wall. The circle is a zoomed in look at the spot. The second picture is of the info sticker on the old pump. The last picture is of the info sticker on the new pump.

How do you control the output of the new pump? It looks like it can give either 18w with 400 gph or 25w with 520 gph.
As far as I know it’s a AC pump. I just have it plugged into a power strip. Maybe I should send another reply to Ecotech to find out if this pump is a DC pump?

It looks like an AC pump, but I’d ask how it gives two different outputs. You’re looking for 18w 400gph for the nyos 160. I’m guessing you’re getting way more power causing more water to be in the body of the skimmer, which is why you’re having the issues.

Have you tired putting the old impeller in the new pump? See what it does?

I would just run the old impeller if it’s working as it should. I am interested in how the pump can be rated for both outputs though.
I think that is what I’ll be doing. Just did a new reply to my email chain to Ecotech to find out the two ratings of the pump. I’ll update here with what I find out.

Did you order the replacement parts direct from Ecotech? Just curious, I have a few parts I need to replace on mine also...was only finding companies overseas where you can order specific replacement parts.

As far as im aware the pump is an AC pump and the sticker may have been modified for the US market. The 160 has a 3 version pump and the 300 the 5 pump

Ive got one of each the 160/300

The water height is absolutely critical and affects how the skimmer performs. So much so that in my large system with the 300 I have a float switch that turns off the skimmer if the water raises more than 1/2 inch or so otherwise it freaks out

The first video looks like it was working as it should albeit difficult with the blue light

I would set the water level to were it should be as per the instructions and then adjust the skimmer from there by turning the large and small adjustment tubes.

I had a faulty 160 but just got a complete new unit as wasn’t sure if it was the impeller or pump

All of my NYOS have worked out of the box and I think the 2-3 week breakin is what they tell everyone hopefully so they adjust it correctly
