New Owner - Red Sea Max E 260

I am 10+ years out of the hobby until yesterday. I found a used system locally, a Red Sea Max E 260. Not everything has gone well, we lost two fish during the transition. Since this is an established tank do I need to go back through some type of process of letting the tank cycle? Also how well does the built in sump and skimmer work? Should I be looking at getting the sump upgrade?

Welcome to Reef2Reef!!! After a transition it can be a good thing to hit pause from adding new things and then, through observation and water testing, let the tank tell you when it is ready for more. Good luck!

Welcome! Sorry to hear about the 2 fish. The built in filtration should be just fine. I would definitely observe/test over the next few weeks as transfers can have issues.

Welcome back to the salty side of life! You could have had some die-off on the live rock during the transition. It couldn't hurt to add some nitrifying bacteria to help get it back on track and test for ammonia. If you reused the old sand that will definitely contribute.

My first tank was the Max E260 which I had for just 2 months before upgrading to the Max S650

Everything works fine as it should but the rear chamber is very compact, so not much space for anything, so the sump is an option for you. I didn’t have it long enough to consider it so....

As far as the cycle is concerned it either is or isn’t so you might want to test for ammonia just to make sure. if you kept everything wet and in place you should be fine, but just check.
