I recently picked a small regal tang (approx 1” full length) a couple of weeks ago. He settled in well with no aggression from other fish, except yellow tang which stopped after 3-4days. He has been eating well and everything offered (mysis, reef feast, Copepods, dry food flake & pellet, nori sheets every few days) and everything appeared ok until yesterday. I noticed he was rubbing his right side against the rock work every now and again, but couldn’t see any noticeable markings on him. This morning I have noticed some markings over that side of his body, see attached pics (not the easiest to capture on camera ha!). Black spots with fading on the black rim along the top of the body.
Do you think this is black ich? What would you recommend for best treatment if so.

I was planning on a water change today so will make up enough to set up a QT tank and carry out a water change on the DT.

Tank Info:
  • 60gal tank which has been running for 18months. (Tang Police: I have ordered and am waiting for my 5ft 110gal tank to arrive at the end of summer).
  • X2 clowns, Pygmy angel, yellow tang, blue cheek goby & hawkfish. All other fish look fins and have been in the tank for some time (blue cheek goby added at same time as regal).
  • Temp:25.5degC, Sal:34-35ppt, Alk:7.5-8, Ca:430, Nit:3-5ppm, Phos:0.03. Tank parameters have been steady for 6months and is maintained via dosing. (Going to check all other parameters today).
  • Running skimmer, Clarisea and UV which I am waiting for replacement bulb to come as has been on for 6months now.

Forgot to say that I did not quarantine. The fish had been in my LFS with x3 other small regals in a tank by there self’s for a couple of weeks. I have quarantined some of my other fish but life has been a bit mental the last few weeks, no excuse I know

If you could get closer pics of the fish, that would be great. I would say it got beat up. It could be black ich, or infection from fights.
