I am cycling my new Red Sea 200XL tank and I have noticed something collecting on the outside of the filter sock as pictured. When I try to remove the filter sock it comes off in strands and collects on the pump intake as shown. I added an Aquamaxx filter matt ahead of the sock but this has not helped.

Any thoughts on what it might be and how to eliminate it?

It is (unless you have other 'stuff' in your tank - likely a product of bacteria in your tank. For example - Pseudomonas produces a mucoid slime that can slough off. I would not worry about it - UNLESS you've added some natural live rock, etc - which may have other things in it?

Thanks for the input. It is pretty shimmy for sure. Any suggestions on getting rid of it? It tends to get a little messy.

Scoop it out? Others may have other ideas.

Thanks for the input. I noticed today that the tank is slightly cloudy. Do you think that this slime could be contributing to cloudy water?
