Not sure what I want to do with this. Should I do a main drain with an emergency drain behind the weir. Then run the return outside the tank and over the side? Or go with one drain and feed the return behind the weir. Obviously the second choice would look better but I'm worried I need an emergency stand.

Any advice for a newbie would be helpful

Plenty of tanks running One drain and 1 return. You should be watching all aspects of a tank and will be able to pick up in a slowing drain.

IMO, it would depend on the placement of the holes vs what the weir looked like. I prefer using a multi-drain setup as they can be tuned to run very quietly. Do you have pictures of the tank showing the holes and weir? Also, what size are each of the holes? That would help with offering more informed advice.

Here are some pics of the hole locations. Both holes are 1". The bulkheads that are currently installed are 1" and 3/4" ( this was in anticipation for a single drain/single return setup).

The tank is a 54g rimless cube for reference.
