This is good advice AFTER you have reached your target alkalinity.
Yes, of course you’ll want to see it increasing, but I’m giving the fundamentals so the OP can be on the right track with calculations.

I think the advice from @rishma is pretty good. I used AFR for about a year and a half. When I had to raise ALK I would just use soda ash to bring it up as it's quick and much cheaper... and it doesn't have all of the other "elements" coming along with it. My system is 300 gallons so I was dosing quite a bit, but I started to notice that my CA was getting really high and some other parameters were also elevated. I started to lower the AFR dose and ADD in soda ash to try and balance it out. Eventually I just switched to the balling method which is basically AFR but split out into components.

Anyway... AFR is a nice product and really simplifies dosing. Good luck.
