Hello everyone,
I have gotten back into the saltwater aquarium hobby after 15 years and decided to do a reef tank this time. My last tank was a fish only and had pretty good luck with it.
My new set up is a 50 gallon (36x18x18) with a sump, running an in sump protein skimmer, uv sterilizer, phosban reactor and normal filter media. Tank has cycled and had the water tested at a local saltwater store. Changed a third of the water and filters. I added 4 snails, 2 blue legged hermit crabs, 1 green chromis, and a zoanthid frag yesterday.
My green chromis has been doing good since yesterday, swimming around with no signs of distress. I fed him this morning, though he really didn't eat, but was still doing ok. I came back about 1 hour later and he was dead. I am not sure what happened, he was a little guy about 3/4" . Checked all my water parameters and everything seems good. Snails and crabs are doing good, zoanthid frag is opening a little here and there but not fully.
Salinity- 1.025
Ph- 8.2
Ammonia- 0 ppm
Nitrite- 0 ppm
Nitrate- 0.5
Temp 76*

I was thinking maybe he pulled through the wave maker, he couldn't have gone through the sump or the filters would have caught him. His mouth was open and extended. Any thoughts or advice would help.
I attached a photo of the tank, I think it loaded up.

Sorry for the long post, but wanted to give as much info as possible, if I missed anything let me know.
Thanks

Welcome to R2R! Sorry to hear about your fish. Any spots or red patches on the fish?

EDIT: How are you testing your water?

Welcome to Reef2Reef!

Unfortunate you didn't have better news to introduce yourself with, but glad you are here now!

I really doubt he got sucked into a pump prior to death. Was it a very small green chromis- edit: never mind, just saw the size. I know some people have had problems where they can't handle stress well from shipping if they are too young.

Sorry everyone, didn't mean to introduce myself like that. I am glad to be here and look forward to the help and experience from everyone.
I have been using api test kits, taking samples from the tank, not the sump. Tank has been running for about 5 weeks and about two of those weeks to cycle.
I purchased the set up off craigslist locally. The guy I bought it from was having problems and gave up.
Brought it home, cleaned everything up (took a couple of weeks), kept the live rock in a dark container with a couple water changes for about 4 weeks to kill off any pests or nuisance algae. Set it up, plumbed it and ran for a couple days to check for leaks, added sand and rock and saltwater and let that run for three weeks, added an ammonia mix from the local store to kickstart cycle. Started testing from day 1 up till day 13 and tested as a normal tank cycle. Took water up there when I got the correct readings, to confirm they were getting the same results. Checked ok
No patches or red spots

Your introduction was just fine, no need to apologize. Most of us started our accounts because we were looking for help.

I really think in this case it was stress related. Chromis are supposed to be "hardy" fish but I have read many cases of them dying for no known cause 12-48 hrs after being purchased.

My LFS was also telling me about some Green Chromis disease going around, but to be honest I've not heard a thing about it.

The part about the guy you bought it from having problems and giving up caught my attention. Did he explain the problems, was it fish death related? How long was the setup fish less? Some diseases could be lingering in the tank from purchase .. Ich takes 76 days fallow, velvet 6 weeks fallow iirc..
Just a thought

Uronemia is often the cause (sp) IMO and may have played here. Any red marks on the rear half?

Also welcome home, you will love it here!

Thanks guys.
No red marks or anything out of the ordinary.
The guy i bought the tank from was having ammonia issues. When my wife and i went and looked at it, the tank was running, but he wasnt using the protien skimmer or filter pads and there was carbon at the bottom of the sump, like a bag spilled or broke, and the only real filtration was live rock in the sump. The sandbed was pretty thick maybe 4 or 5 inches. He did say he tryed a clean up crew, but they all died too. No fish in the tank for probably a couple months when i looked at it.
