NEW TO SUMP SYSTEMS

I have managed to keep a LPS tank alive but not thriving for almost two years. I have been managing this with a hang on the back filter. I am upgrading from a 50 gallon to a 90 gallon and want to sump it out. Looking for tips/tricks, does and don’t and also just common information on the subject.

I'm sorry this didn't get a reply yet, but let me bump it up for you

Is your new 90 gallon drilled for an overflow to your sump?

I think members here on R2R can help you with sump tips, tricks, and mods, but it would help to know a bit more about your tank and sump.

In the meantime, here's a very basic overview of sump setups. Please ignore that these show only one drain line for each of the example systems. I would advise using an overflow with at least two drains, and Ideally three drains, but hopefully this helps:

Just keep in mind that you don't need a crazy turnover rate through the sump. Use wavemakers in the tank for your flow. A turnover of 4 to 5 times your tank volume is plenty.
