Hi everyone,

I’m fairly new to the forum and to the hobby. My wife and I changed over from a 60 gallon tank to an 80 gallon tank with sump a few months ago (no sump previously). We’ve noticed that the water looks hazy during the day when the lights are on, but looks clear when the lights are off. After some research, I believe I need to add some more filters? As of today, I have some Chaeto growing in one area of our sump and a skimmer in another section.

So my question is, what would our next step be? I don’t see a place on the actual sump where I can add any filter socks. I’ve looked at mechanical filtration with the fleece filter rollers, but I’m not sure if that’s what I need? Maybe there is an easier solution?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Consider trying some Sea Lettuce in your sump. It will help clean up the water as it passes through a bit better than chaeto. I like it a lot.

Try purigen or chemi pure or carbon. Works wonders. Water will be crystal clear in a day

Would I use the Chaeto and Sea Lettuce in the same compartment, or would I just need get rid of the Chaeto? Would the lettuce actually filter out more particles then my current setup over time?

Would these harm any fish or corals that I have? I'm assuming that this would be something that you would always be needing to add once the water became cloudy again?

I would run carbon in a reactor or a uv sterilzer or both. I run both on my aquarium with filter socks.

Do you think filter socks is a must have? What if I were to run a UV sterilizer?

One doesn't replace the other. You don't have to use filter socks but you should see the detritus they pull from my tank!

Filter socks is most definitely not a must. I used to run without them for many years. I designed my current sump with socks and that is why i use them.

A uv sterilzer will clear up your water and make it super clear. If u are thinking about getn one. Get a real nice one if you want to reduce pathagons etc. They are not cheap.

If you get a less expensive one they will give you water clarity for sure.
