I bought a used Nikon D40 from a member here ( great buy) and I bought a
Tamron SP AF 90mm F/2.8 Di macro 1:1 model 272EN lens.
My problem is when I try and setup the camera with this lens for auto focus, I get the message, " This option not available with current settings"
Same with AF-area mode.

AF works with the stock lens.

This is suppose to be the second gen lens that has the AF ability and everything I've read says it should.
What settings do I need to change?

fyi, I do have the AF and M ring set right.

I believe that the D40 changed the auto-focusing motor from the body into all the lenses. The Tamron lens that you have does not have the motor in the lens and cannot auto-focus.

While this does not sound good, most people do not use the autofocus capability for macro shots.

It is suppose to have the motor in it. According to the seller.

I have the AF version of the Tamron 90mm and you don't have to change any of the settings, just slide the ring on the lens so you can view the blue AF lettering and it will be in AF mode

I contacted Tamron and with their help I found out my lens is the older version which does not have a built-in motor and will not auto focus with my D40
