So very true!!!!! I have a fancy nikon with a fancy macro and my iPhone pics look better.... It's all about who's behind the camera.....;)

Nikon fever here!
We have several nikons but the d90 is my favorite out of all and is what I would repurchase in a heartbeat.
The biggest factor of all is the lens'
Glass is going to be your biggest investment.
Do you already have any glass?
If you already have glass then that's what you go with unless your starting from scratch.
I would go to like a bestbuy or something and ask the sales guy to pull out the dslr's from the display.
I also think maybe target has some out?
See what each feels like, decide on glass... Your prob gonna want a macro sooner or later for your tank so figure out what you want in glass before you purchase the body.
If your on a budget you can find pretty good deals on tamron 90mm glass but the nikkor 105mm macro is my choice out of the two. I ended up purchasing the tamron macro just cause it was too good of a deal to pass up at 280 shipped it was a steal so got one used in great shape but if it wasn't for that I would have pulled the trigger on the nikkor 105mm but it's pricey, like 800 new.
Regardless of what you purchase they are both great purchase, at one time I would have said canon had an edge on nikon but I no longer feel thats the case, nikon is giving canon a run for their money and both are great buys.
You might also look into the d40x if they still make it, it's similar to the d90 just doesn't have all the bells and whistles the d90 does.
I know at one time Costco had a package deal for the d40x that seemed like a good buy but not sure if they are still carrying it offhand?

Chris is right when it comes to an entry level DSLR they are both very simmilar...the glass is what matters the most. Also you just cant be afraid to use you camera settings. Really you need to just play with them and take as many pics as possible, and go back to your CPU and see how they came out...then just adjust from there. I bought my camera June of last year, before that I never even owned a camera, all I did is play around with it and learned the settings that worked best.

yea Kayl it was a tough decision but I don't think ill be sorry :tongue: both cameras put out great pics as one can clearly see in some of the pics on this thread but I am gonna have to dish out some money on a great nikon macro lens any recommendations

What Nikon set up are you running. I'm leaning towards the Nikon d5100 or the d90, and I really don't know which lens to get.

I would go with the sony a55... I could write a whole page on why I think its the best in this price range for top down aquarium macro, but I would probably just start a huge camera flame war =). I know you've been collecting zoas/palys so if photographing them is what your going for I can help you out and give you tips on settings/etc. PM me if you need any help!
Anyways, the d60 will be very nice. Definitely spend money on a good macro lens, you will be amazed at the difference, (and depressed that the macro lens costs as much as the camera body).
also... to the "its the skill of the photographer, not the camera" people. I have to disagree. I could give my a55 to a complete noob and let him use it on auto and the photos will come out amazing. I have a lumix SLR "bridge" camera from 1 year ago that I bought after reading SO many of the "its the skill" posts on all over the place.... I thought I wouldn't need to buy a SLR if I just "learned how to use the camera". Well I read, and learned, and spent hours and hours trying to get the settings perfect. And yet... No matter the settings on that camera.... my photos could NEVER look as good as the SLR setup, not even close.
This was one of the first photos I took with the a55 after about 10 minutes of getting it out of the box and hooking up a 100mm f2.8 macro... its effortless.
