I was heading down to the camera store to pick up a new D90 earlier this week (turned out to still be on backorder) when I was introduced to the D5000. I sleek smaller version that seems to be more than capable of the upgrade from my D40x as it uses the same sensor and I would still be able to shoot vids.

Hmmmm..... I can get the D90, body only, or the D5000 with a couple hundred dollars towards a new lens.

Has anyone done a comparison on the major differences of these two yet?

get the D90!

The LCD on the D5000 is one of their old ones, which are terrible.

The LCD on the D5000 is 2.7" and 230,000 pixels

the LCD on the D90 is 3" and 900,000 pixels.

LIVE view would be basically useless with the lower resolution screen, and you would struggle to focus, which is the whole point of the feature...

I have the better of the two on my D300 and it was the single best thing about my upgrade from the D80, which has the other LCD.

I know that there is a slight difference in points of focus, speed, compatability with some Nikkor lenses and amount of manual controls, but I played around with it and the D90 floor model and was impressed with both.

no doubt they are both awesome cameras.

My opinion is the $200 is worth it, if for no other reason than the monitor.

Its also really nice when you are out somewhere, and at a glance REALLY know if you "got" the shot or not.

Just my 2 cents. Youll be happy with either.

Honestly, i dont really understand why Nikon brought out the D5000.

Sort of a weird level of camera...They have way too many models in the entry level category =)

One thing i didnt know if the D5000's screen is on a pivot, which is infact awesome....

too bad it wasnt the resolution of the D90, and had the swivel.

Heres a really good comparison that was done.

This should really help with your decision.

I was really surprised when I saw the D5000 and the features it has. The swivel mounted live view screen was pretty cool. It just seems that this is a better camera than the D60 and right under the D90.

I think one thing you will really miss is the info window at the top of the camera.

I realize you can pivot the screeen down, and see the info, but its really nice to have that critical info ALWAYS available.

The D5000 is kinda funny. Its got some GREAT features, that make it ahead of the rest in some areas....then it takes 2 steps back with others....im not sure what i think of it...

Either one is a 1000x upgrade from a D40....CMOS sensors are the ONLY way to go.

Yep, I guess I might have to put up a few extra chalice frags and get the D90 as that is the one I will be the happiest with. I just found it interesting that they were so closely related.

If I correctly Stan, the D200 does not have the video feature and that is something I am looking for in my next upgrade.

Freshwater filter only or is it? Have you ever used an HOB filter on a saltwater tank?
