I have a 3.5 year old 170 gallon mixed reef and have been trying to lower my nitrates with minimal success. I added ceramic media (logs) to my sump when I originally set up the tank and it just dawned on me that these may actually be a large part of the problem so, I'm thinking about removing them. My questions are. 1. Could these be a large part of my Nitrate problem and should I remove them? 2. Is is safe to remove them all at once? I'm just worried about removing too much bacteria at once and crashing the tank. Any advice?
