I have had this sweety in my system for a few years now...but never known what it was...dont think it is a chalice...can anyone help me out and tell me what it is ???? it is about 11"x11"..brite purple with neon green eyes....its so big that everything that gets blown around in the water colum ends up on it...thats what happened to the skeleton mark in the center of it .....

its a chalice, but those spots develop usually due to low flow in that spot of the colony due to growth :(

I should add.....the detritus sits there and smokes out that spot
 
thanks guys....its defenantly not a stunner ...it has never had any feeders on it.... i really dont think its a chalice at all...i think its a kind of Oxypora Lacera.......it dosen't grow like any chalice i have ever seen...i call it a Purple Madusa

The term "Chalice" is very generic and doesn't refer to a specific species of coral. IMO, I wish people wouldn't even use the darned word...lol.

That may be why you don't think your coral looks like a "chalice." One of the species, that's commonly called a chalice, is Oxypora, which you refer to.

among a few other species, are all commonly called "Chalice."
