Noise Problems with MAG 24

I recently purchased a MAG [EDIT] 24 from a member here on R2R. This pump is making a VERY loud noise. I am not talking about the noise of a normal functioning pump, this is loud. It sounds like the magnetic drive shaft is hitting the inside wall of the assembly. I have removed the shaft and impellar and inspected it. everything seems to be in order, nothing cracked or chipped. I made sure that the ceramic rod was properly inserted. I have no Idea what to do. The pump will move water, but this is an intollerable noise (it is louder than my car enginne). I know they sell replacement impellars, but seeing as the impellar assembly seems to be intact I am not sure a new one will fix the problem.:squigglemouth: I am just looking for some insight, any suggestions welcome.

it could be the housing, there is a small cap held in by 3 little plastic strips in the housing intake. make sure it is intact. if thats fine then is the impeller blades firmly in place or does it seem to rock like a top loosing speed. or is the white plastic rod broken that holds the impeller together. and is the impeller cavity warped

Another thing to look at is if the spacer between the magnet and the impeller is there.
I had one making noise and that small spacer was missing so the impeller was moving back and forth.

A replacement impeller is around $20. Always good to have a spare laying around for emergencies.

I don't know what I was thinking... This is a MAG 24 pump not a MAG 12, sorry for the confusion. I will take it apart again when I get home and check to see if there is a small cap in the housing cover. I know that inside the actual pump there is a small white piece that the shaft sits in (is this what you are talking about?). With the cover on I cannot get to the impeller to see if it is loose.

Another thing to look at is if the spacer between the magnet and the impeller is there.

What does the spacer look like?

just pull the impeller out , beyond the mag 18 they start to get noisey anyway

Hmm.. This is not something I want to hear:neutral: .. After I get the pump back to its original noise level is there anything that can be done to quite the pump? I have seen this pump plumbed as an external pump; are there any drawbacks to locating the pump somewhere like a utility closet beside the tank? The only drawbacks that I can think of are more potential for leaks and decreased flow. With a MAG 24 I am not too worried about decreased flow.. Any thoughts or ideas about quieting the pump after it is fixed?

What does the spacer look like?

I opened a new impeller.

Thanks for your reply Steve. I took my pump apart last night and everything looked to be ok. My impeller looks slightly different from that and does not have the caps you are talking about. This is not a picture of my impellar, but it is a picture for a replacement mag 24 impeller

Mine looks like this one. Everything seems to be accouned for.

See if the rubber caps are stuck in the pump and the cover "volute" mags will work externally but you have to be carefull man the volute is very weak and breaks easy If it was kicked... You can place a rubber mat under it and use a piece of spa flex to plumb it so it's not rigid...

I know giving advice without pictures is hard so here are some pictures. I think instead of rubber caps there are ceramic bushings. The one with "wings" fits down into the pump and there is another one embedded in the volute. I am going to do some testing today and tomorrow with some rubber and non-rigid connections to see if that is my problem. Thanks for all of the help so far!

Make sure you have the foam pad attached to it for it not to vibrate in the sump bottom. Also, when my old Mag 12 was placed near the side of my sump it would make a ton of noise being so close to the glass.

i could almost garuntee those bushing are wore out..... i had this problem with some laguna pumps when i maxed them out... its starts making noise then starts grinding and capoot!!!!lol i would get a new impeller assembly it prolly comes with the bushings....

UPDATE: The pump is now running normal. After taking those pictures and putting the pump back together the clicking and clacking has stopped. Not entirely sure what I did different, but I am not complaining. The pump is still too loud for my liking tho :neutral:. The tank is in my living room right beside the television, noise is not acceptable.

Have you tried putting a rubber or neoprene mat under it?

Yes I have, I keep forgetting to mention that. I have tried in with a mat and I also tried mounting it externally with flexible connections. The test rig that I setup today consists of the pump being externally mounted setting on 1" foam with clear flexible tubing to isolate the vibrations. I even tried encasing the pump in a box with padding just to see if I could quiet it up a bit. The impromptu case helped a little but not enough (nor was it ever intended to be a permanent fix, just a test). I think it is just a matter of down sizing the pump. This is what I get for seeing an excellent deal and jumping to get it before doing my research. Soo if anyone wants to trade for a smaller pump :tongue:
