@mstoneman17 can probably get those and give it a try.

@Suohhen I understand. It's a tough hobby. One then comes on the internet seeking clarification and wonders... hmmm... I'm also a natural skeptic!

But in retrospect it seems wiser to assume the worst and not entertain a supposedly harmless filter feeder, since I doubt such a thing does a ton of good compared to what aiptasia apparently can do.

Most people in the area I live use these, a couple locals breed them and sell them for 5-10 dollars each.

Are there different types of Aiptasia?

The head of mine (here I go again, I know!) just doesn't look like what I'm seeing of aiptasia. Specifically numbers of fingers, circular structure, etc.

There may be different species, Im not sure, but I've noticed the same aiptasia (in multiple tanks) grow and look different based on lighting, flow, nutrients etc.

Why would the nudibranches not spread it like anything else trying to kill it?
Because it is their whole diet, they consume it until there is nothing left. They can find it when it's so small that we can not even see it.
Unfortunately they do not survive once it is gone, but they are short life span animals in the wild as well.
Many folks will give theirs away on fb when they have taken care of the aiptasia, they then help someone elses tank and survive longer.

@mstoneman17 ok, makes sense.

So I thought they can spew their seeds/offspring/whatever when "attacked"?

Goodness, I'm butchering basic biology here! But you hopefully know what I'm trying to say. That is, the remaining cells and growth from that isn't the only way they propogate?

My Chromis goes in and out the back door of it's rock hideout all the time where my filter feeder is. Has never been stung that I know of.

Aiptasia grow up in the fashion that one is, majano do not do that nor are they that thin. I've lot of experience with majanos as I kept them for a while.
I think your missing vette's point. he is saying the pic of the majano posted is a majano and the pic that the thread starter posted is aiptasia but as for treatment it doesn't matter unless of course the treatment is berghia

this pic below is majano. After 34 years, Ive seen plenty of pests. Aptasia are glass anemones and have clear stems and curly tentacles thin at the end. The original picture shows just that - Aptasia. The main difference between the Manjano anemone and the Aiptasia anemone is that the tentacles of the Aiptasia are typically slender and very pointed at the tips, while the Manjano anemone has ‘stubby' tentacles that are often bulbous and colorful at the tips.

Aiptasia.

We may have to agree to disagree.

I've been in the hobby for some time as well, though didn't encounter these near as often at the start.

This is what I think of when I see aptasia, if I’m wrong, I’d like to know what it is.
