I recently upgraded my light and got 2 beaded sea anemones online, one came with a torn foot…the other looked ok, but not the best. The one that came with a torn foot, got an infection…and it was really bad. So, in an attempt to save it, I cut it in half so I got most of the infected tissue off it. And I put it under the light in a container with a small amount of iodine. The other anemone looked fine until it randomly started losing tissue…so I put it under the light with a small amount of iodine in the container. (The anemone’s are in separate containers) any ideas on what happened, and what I can do to make sure these guys don’t die?

Torn foot is a really bad situation for a nem. If it came with a tear on its foot you should contact the seller, there’s nothing that could happen in a shipping bag that would tear a foot, and it likely happened if someone was ripping it off a rock.

As far as saving them, that one in the bottom picture looks really rough. If you have Cipro, I’d try an antibiotic treatment. Otherwise, letting the nem settle in a low light, low flow area might help it to acclimate. Bacterial infections can crush nems, but maybe the healthier one of the two just needs more time to settle in.

Thank you for the reply, is there any substitute for cipro? I don’t have any. Will the iodine help?

Never mind, I found some cipro…it’s in pill form. Each pill is worth 500 milligrams. Can someone walk me through how to treat the anemones with this?

Im not one for antibiotics with anemones as often light and flow are what upsets them as well as water changes and especially new tanks that experience swings.
If you have a newer tank, it will be part of issue (tank under 4 months of age) and low light and flow will cause them to shrink while bright light will cause them to hide as will high flow. Same applies to high phosphate

If the anemone's foot was torn, a lot of the times it can heal on its own, provided you give it good, stable tank conditions. Unless it was a BTA or a magnifica, I would not try cutting it in half, just because most clown-hosting anemones that are not BTA or Magnifica do not naturally split on its own in the wild--hence, you'd be taking a big chance with cutting it.

You will know if its doing better/has a chance to live if the half starts trying to reform a circle. If it just lays there, deflated, not attempting to reform the circular form within the next day or so, chances are, it's on its way out.

How are these anemones looking today? I’m pretty worried about them.
