Hey everyone.
I've been dealing with a pretty aggressive algae/bacteria outbreak since completing my hyposalinity treatment for an ich outbreak. The system is a 6 month old 40 gallon all in one tank that I had upgraded to from my previous 20 gallon system.
I completed the month long hyposalinity treatment about two months ago, which resulted in my copepods and algae getting wiped out. After my salinity was brought from 1.009 back up to 1.025 over the course of about 2 weeks I started noticing some cyano growth which eventually sorted itself out after I started running activated carbon.
Over the past two weeks this brown algae or bacteria has started growing pretty quickly all over my rockwork and on my sand bed. It is also causing a strong odour in my room which is not normal.
My Parameters are:
Nitrate: 2.5ppm
Phosphate: 0ppm
Calcium: 440ppm
Alkalinity: 9.3dkH
Magnesium: 1200ppm
pH: 8.15
Salinity: 1.025
Between the stages of the cyano outbreak and this new outbreak I had tried to add a cleaner shrimp, a royal gramma and a yellow watchman goby and two of the three of them had died within two weeks of me adding them.
My current stocking list is a pair of oscellaris clowns, a lubbocks fairy wrasse, a yellow watchman goby, some blue legged hermit crabs, a conch, some snails and various LPS and soft corals.
Does anyone have any idea what this algae/bacteria could be and how I can deal with it? Could it have contributed to do with the sudden deaths of my cleaner shrimp and royal gramma?
