Hey guys I have a 55 gallon frag tank with a 40 gallon sump currently running Euro-Reef RS-250

For the past weeks my skimmer has not been collecting anything in the cup. I cleaned out the neck and still nothing. is it possible the skimmer has gone bad? since i cleaned the next will it need to "break in again"

I have a friend that's selling a NYOS 220 for a decent price is that overall for my system?

Thanks!

I would say so. It’s rated for 125-500g, unless you have chunky bioload in your frag tank you may struggle to get it to work consistently.

While there are not many Euro Reefs left those things were built to last. When was the last time you cleaned out the pump? Is it still the original pump or have you replaced it? The body will last forever, but the pump may need to be replaced.

is it just purely frags ?
do you feed them ?

if neither are yes than you could get reduce output
but skimmers dont just remove pollutants as they are fairly indiscriminate
they can remove anything that is hydrophobic

has your bubble production decreased ?

would be worth give it a good clean
interluding ensuring the air intake is very clean
an over night soak in vinegar will normally do this

as for breaking in again, this doesnt normally take anywhere near as long as when starting a new skimmer

That skimmer is way overkill and the Nyos 220 would be overkill as well. Your skimmer is working exactly how a oversized skimmer behaves and you are reacting exactly how someone with an oversize skimmer acts, I need another bigger one. I know because I did the exact same thing.

I would put a Euro Reef RS 80 on that tank.

Exactly what I would have said. Way oversized skimmer IMO, I used that same size skimmer on my light to moderately stocked 210 and it was still nearly too much.
