Hi all,
this is Christian, I am together with my brother Matthias founder of Nyos.
First of all thank you so much for all the positive and constructive reviews. It is the greatest reward for what we do and all the hard work we have put into our salt mix. Thank you all!
I came across this thread and saw that there are many unanswered questions and I wanted to use the opportunity to give you some background information about salt mixes.
Let‘s first start with consistency because this has been discussed here lately: In general, it is impossible to mix salt without any variety through several batches. It is also extremely difficult to mix salt homogenousely in general. It of course depends on the mixing method you chose, on the granule size of the different salts, the consistency within a specific raw material and even things like temperature and many many more factors. With the ICP testing of every batch, we wanted to make this more transparent to you that you see the variety in the parameters instead of hiding it.
As assumed by some of you, we found some tweaks here and there to reduce the variety of the parameters even further and we are constantly improving. The acceptable range of ALK is now 8.0-8.9 with a target of 8.5. Lately we managed to narrow it down to 8.3.-8.8 and hope to improve here even more.
Keep in mind, with our latest improvement, the introduction of the MS Trace Elements (like Selenium, Rubidium and others that can only be detected with the ICP-MS) the ratio between the biggest ingredient (sodium chloride) and the smallest ingredient (selenium) is 1:50.000.000 (!!). That means on 1.000kgs of Sodium Chloride we have to add 0,00002 kgs of Selenium and mix that homogeneously so if you test the salt you will find 0,2 ppb (parts per billion) Selenium. To make this possible, you really need to think outside the box.
Hope that helps you a little bit to understand the difficulties when mixing salt. If you would like to know more about salt mixed, let us know.
By the way: We chose 8.5 dkh because we think this is how most of you rund their reef tanks. But is that actually true? What ALK would you prefer? If we figure out a way to make a representative poll what users would prefer, we would adapt the receipe.
Best regards
Christian
