I found weighing salt is far more accurate and consistent if you have a scale and want to go down that rabbit hole too 😂
You just said the hydrometer was the most accurate thing in the hobby -_-

Weighing salt will be MORE accurate? And which scale is most accurate? And will I need to buy some calibration weights or something then too?!

The hydrometer is super accurate. I weigh the salt so it’s spot on every time. Very little fidgeting

Hi,
yes, weighing is way more accurate, I would recommend the same. Also keep in mind that refractometers and the hydrometer is calibrated for 25 Celcius (77 F). Usually when you do a water change it is a good bit colder, I would say around 20 Celcius (68 F). That again changes the Salinity by 1.

I don’t want to confuse you too much, I just want to make you more thoughtful that there are many influencial factors on your test results.

From my practical experience, I would recommend the following:

-Double check ALK with another test kit (e.g. Salifert)
-Double Check your hanna checker with a good reference solution

i used the hydrometer with 77 degree water from tank and adjusted my refractometer accordingly. Did the same with water in mixing bucket at 78 degrees (there is a chart for adjusting based on temp, very slight .2ppt increase adjustment between 77 and 78F). I only have hanna checker for alk right now but used two reagent bottles and swished everything in RODI between tests. So at 35ppt I’m getting 8.3dkh (twice). Better than the 7.6dkh I was getting before. I guess the hanna +/- variance could account for the difference from the 8.7dkh ICP sticker?
