So technically this is a branching octospawn. 8 months ago when I was taking it off of the plug to put it in my aquarium, the base shattered. I quickly tried to super glue it back together and obviously that was not successful. It recovered slightly and then was the target of a crab which has since been removed. Now obviously it looks like it's doing horribly. It has detached from the base and I'm curious is this death or is this a last-ditch effort to try to relocate?

Polyp bailout is a last ditch effort to survive. In the ocean, it can be swept away to a different area with different conditions to try to survive. In our limited aquariums it is super rare that it can survive because the water conditions are the same throughout the tank.
