Good to know thank you. I thought that additional time in the QT tank with moving would help rinsing off more of the Bayer. Less chance of inadvertently adding traces of Bayer to my DT.

I can't say I blame you there. I rinse mine in three containers of tank water and then dump tank water over them for a final rinse. I'm a little paranoid about the Bayer getting into my DT as well.

As stated dipping in straight RO/DI water, i.e fresh water not salt water was where things went wrong. Bayer is very mild on acros. I have found the smooth skinned acros will be finicky about even Bayer dips, but all other acros tolerate it super well. In the future just rinse well in three little containers of tank water, ie. salt water.

Bravo to you for researching and really looking into the best way to dip. Sometimes we can gather too much information an get things jumbled up. Your idea of taking notes is really good. I have a file of notes on all sorts of things to do with my reef tanks. Good luck and don't despair, I visualize more healthy frags coming to your tank in the future and you wont make this mistake again.

I am not in to alot of thing that I should be doing, and dipping is one. First off if the corals look and are dieing or dead out of the bag, myself I would contact the seller. Given time and as a few have suggested in earlier posts, with time and proper parameters they will come back.
I have had corals that I though were bleached and dead come back to life. I even found a piece that broke off and was covered in sand at the top of the sand bed that I am not bring back to life. :)

As others have said the dip in RO was most likely the cause of your problems. Just curious....

Was the RO rinse at tank temp or was it cold?? That could cause lots of issues as well.

i wouldnt use bayer. i've never had it work for me because i think its just WAY too harsh. i use coral rx. i dont know how some people can use bayer b/c when i dip sps the polyps bail out and the skeleton just turns white.

Actually, i have found Bayer to be MUCH more forgiving than some of the other commercial dips like Revive.
Just last night I brought home a new sps frag, cut it in half (wanted to put a piece in each of my new tanks) and then dipped both halves in Bayer.
Forgot about it and they ended up being in there for 30 minutes at least. Rinsed them in more tank water and then dropped them onto my frag rack and they are fine.

i've found it to be the exact opposite. i used the cherry corals FAQ i dont think its up anymore not sure about the exact ratio but i no longer use it and use coralrx.

Have dipped many frags in bayer and have never experienced this.

every coral i've ever dipped in bayer - the skeleton is completely exposed the skin is burned right off and the polyps are not visible. after about 2 weeks of being in the tank the polyps start to show and the skin starts to come back but i would never use it again

I have a separate notebook and calendar that I write links in and print steps out, even for things I have not done yet- so I have a repository of great information to go back to. I'm such a nerd I even index it lol.

I cant believe you guys have so many issues with Bayer dip, seems odd. I have personally dipped every single coral I have bought in the past few years in Bayer. Everything from Acropora to Xenia with virtually no losses. Heck the lfs i frequent is like a Bayer triage unit when new corals come in. My typical regiment is 20ml of bayer to 1 standard cup of tank water. I then soak for 15 min while using a turkey blaster to blast every inch of the coral throughly. Followed by 2 five minute rinses in tank water while basting then I inspect for eggs and signs of pests and send swimming in the display. Every coral in my newest build shown below went through this regiment and is doing fantastic. Heck ill take a dead frag here or there then dealing with a system wide outbreak of AEW, ZEN, etc...

I have used bayer as my main dip for all types of corals for years with absolutly no issues. If any of my new additions died it was from other issues not the dip, but that is just my experience. I have added way more than the recommended amount to see what would happen and still no issues. It is important to rinse after and rinse well!

Update: After 24 hours it looks like the strawberry definitely didn't make it and I'm pretty sure the color I'm seeing on the fantasia is dead stuff that hasn't fallen off yet. I still have hope for the grape juice and other ones but the superman looks worse today than it did last night. [emoji22]

This is the Bayer I used.

I used 10mls for 8oz (236-240mls) of tank water. I think it was because I rinsed in ro water instead of tank water.

After reading everyone's replies I'm pretty certain that my mistake was with the RO rinse not the amount of Bayer I used. [emoji53]
