Ok camera people....

Looking into a camera, thinking since it will be my first digital SLR I think the Nikon D40 would be a good first choice. I use to shoot with a Canon AE-1. Now going digital.
Opinions on the D40 ?

My vote is Canon, but either will get the job done. Yes, the lenses are as, if not more, important than the bodies. Get a body that will feel good in your hands and has controls that make sense to you.

See I've had my eyes on the Rebel T1I, but not sure how into photography I will get.
I think I will get into it hardcore again, but just not sure -_-

Rebel T1I any suggestions on that then ?

Canon, not into the rebel series but that is to each their own. I have a 40D CANON and will definately say, +2 on the lens issue. If you have a $500 camera and a $50 lens, guess what, You only have a $50 camera. Your system is only as good as the weakest link. Good glass is paramount. This also depends on what you are going to do with it. Sell the pics to someone else, then you really need good glass. Good luck. Mark

I really am a Nikon person myself! I currently have a Nikon D300, but had the D90 previous to that. The D40 is designed in much of the same way that the D90 was. i was really impressed with the D90 as it was not overly expensive but took pictures like a professional camera! The D40 gets my vote, but as stated before a good lens is a MUST!

It depends on what you are wanting to do with the camera. The kits will come with Nikor lenses which are great lenses. Nikon makes some of the best lenses IMHO but they are quite pricey. If you are just wanting an all around good lens for taking pics then buy the kit and then save up for a nice macro lens. I am using a Tamron 90mm macro lens, but I would really like to get the Nikor 105mm VR lens. But that's just me.

I would say go for the kit if you think you will want the stuff in it eventually. Or you could just buy the body and get a nice lens. It all depends on what you wanna do with it.

I've found the kit lenses usually aren't very good. I have a Canon Rebel XT that came with a Quantaray 28-90mm f/2.8 lens and hate the lens. I really need to get a better lens for it. I'm not sure how Nikon kit lenses rate.
