I’m planning a small mixed reef hopefully with some macro algae for the natural look. I’ve made my scape and took advice and just glued 1 weird one.. just contemplating putting some 5mm Eva foam inside the tank under the rocks to help cushion the rock to glass bit. Maybe just 2 20cm squares under the islands? But this is my scape I think :)

If you plan to get some frags, I'd drill a few holes inside the rock to make it easier putting the frag plug in it. Otherwise I think it looks neat!

Sometimes the frags come on frag plugs. So you can just plug them into the rock :)

I often rather than drill holes cut off the stems with bones cutters (wire cutters will work) and place on flat surface or putty it to rock

I’ve had a bash at scaling taking your comments into consideration! Now I have a small issues left.. being the wave maker. It is aimed just behind the rocks but I was tempted to make it opposite the outlet to make a gyre ? But my last tank I hid power heads in the rock work

This should be fine, just aim it upwards a little as you dont want to stir the sand

I might need to lift it further up as these dang wave makers can’t be angled. There really clever and the motor etc is on the outside. Only I can’t angle it

It's been while since I had a tank, but my upcoming plan is going to be the following.....

I'll do a fishless cycle. I'll use Live Rock and Live Sand to start. NOT dry rock. I'll feed it ammonia and keep it at 2ppm. I'll also add some Fritz Turbo Start 900 to help with seeding. My goal will be to get as much bacterial colonization as possible on all surfaces. Lights will remain off x2 months. Then I'll start adding in utilitarian fish to handle any ugly phase that tries to rear its ugly head when lights go on. My fish list will be predetermined as well as the order of introduction. During all of this set up, I'll be keeping my parameters to a level I want for the long term. Another of my goals is to introduce my inhabitants to an ecosystem that is already well defined. Less stress on the fish, equals less stress on the tank.

Well after I finish my 1st issue of not gluing my internal sump down so it doesn’t float away how are you feeding ammonia ? I have sand and dry rock :). Can I leave it a month no lights and add a hardy shrimp or 2. Unfortunately no one by me has marine systems to steal bacteria from

Probably the most common way today is to start with bottled bacteria from Dr, Tim's or Fritz Turbo Start 900 and add Ammonium Chloride to feed the bacteria. The old ways still work fine as well.

This is the stuff I was going to use as I’d read it was decent to chuck in to cycle and can use that doctor Tim’s with it :)
