I'm inclined to lean more towards the LARS then the Old Tank Syndrome. Maybe they are one and the same.

What's old tank syndrome?
I had my 55g reef for 29 years and then I switched it over to a 75g. I still have the same rocks and sand in it and the same hang on back filter which was called a mini reef, holds about 15 gallons and now I use it as a hob sump. It used to hold dls like the wet dry's and have a built in skimmer with an air stone lol. It even has a denitrification chamber which I never really understood so didn't use.
I did always siphon the sand when I did a water change though and yes I do have detritus.

I agree, my step into the 21st century was reading r2r. Like what's a filter sock? Lol.
Our 30 yr old transitioned to a 100 gallon pretty well. I'm pretty glad to hear from Paul B that some of the "old" ways without the bells and whistles are ok too! We follow old school sand bed vacuming, water change, cleaning etc and pretty much observe. My new test kits came in and nitrite, nitrate, ammonia were 0, phos alittle high, ok, need to change r/o filters!
Easy peasy! Observation is best

My test kits came in a wooden box and read "Keep in a cool root cellar so the Indians don't get into it"
