Ornate wrasse with melanurus wrasse?

hi all,
I recently bought myself an ornate wrasse which is doing great. While I was at my lfs I saw a beautiful melanurus wrasse and I was wondering if they would be fine together.

my tank is 150 leters (40 gallons ) would that be too small for 2 wrasses?

I don't have a problem keeping multiple Halicheorus wrasses together per se but I wouldn't put two in a 40 gallon.

In a small tank and food competition. I wouldn't thats asking for trouble

that’s fair enough I will wait until I can afford a bigger tank.

old thread, but.... i want a ornate wrasse, and a Melanarus Wrasse. one for the looks and the other for the Bristle worm and fire worm hunting/removal. 180G display. hooded with screen in the back. they can jump all they like. but will they kill each other?

180g ..... one orange line bristle tooth, tomini, 2 yellow watchman, 1 manderin, 1 royal gram. 1 bi color blem,1 fox face, 1 ocula clown, dimoned head, tiger pistol shrimp of destroying(needs to go), springer damsl, and a ton of bristle worms...... like 100+

Those are rookie numbers. You're gonna have to pump those up a bit.

Shouldn’t be an issue. I have a Melanarus Wrasse, Adorned Wrasse, and a China Pearl Wrasse that get along without issue. Surprisingly they hunt in a pack right before lights out. The China Wrasse flushes out the rocks and the other Wrasses pick up whatever comes out.

Shouldn’t be an issue. I have a Melanarus Wrasse, Adorned Wrasse, and a China Pearl Wrasse that get along without issue. Surprisingly they hunt in a pack right before lights out. The China Wrasse flushes out the rocks and the other Wrasses pick up whatever comes out.

right on. iv been in the hobby reefing since the early 90s but never did a wrasse before. i had no idea how good they looked. LFS got a whole reef system in, tank and all, and there was a ornate in it. i was floored. started me looking, and on a side note i wonted to thin down the worms in my system. googled what eats bristle worms and the melanarus is first on the list. i had always used the flame hawk for this but its hit or miss with them. they might of just took the #1 spot in my top 5 and they was not even on the list before.

Macropharyngodon ornatus - ornate leopard wrasse
Halichoeres ornatissimus - ornamented wrasse
Thalassoma pavo - ornate wrasse
Something else?

The first and second will maybe work but could be bullied my the Halichoeres melanurus especially if the melanurus is a male. Males are less brown and more the bright blue and red.

If you have a Thalassoma pavo, first off where did you get it and can I have it? Second, I hope your other fish are tough because they are monsters and you should probably rehome (to me :face-with-tears-of-joy: ).

If it is an ornate leopard wrasse and the melanurus is added later they could work

Macropharyngodon meleagris and yes Macropharyngodon ornatus...... im still kicking it around but the last thing i want to do is kill for nothing. i know nothing about the Wrasse family and learing before i do

sorry your right... i copped and pasted from live Aquaria i was looking at and grabed the wrong one
Melanurus Wrasse (Halichoeres melanurus) when i googled what ate bristem worms it was the Number one fish.
Macropharyngodon ornatus is just wonderfull looking. i would have a tank full of them and Macropharyngodon meleagris. both look amazing. im torn in do i want the red or the blue....

You could add both species of leopard. They will eat the baby bristle worms. Just make sure to get female leopards not males. The biggest will become male but best not to have two by accident

that is something i was thinking about, picking up a Flame Hawk for the worms and then i dont have to worry about them getting along as much. the hawk is a cool fish and pretty. once they get bigger they do pick at the worms some also... thx you . given me a bit to think about.
