OT Wifi booster/extender/amplifier

And tin foil hacks (windsurfer mod must google) heh but yep height is big, the size of the 2.4 signal is just under five inches tall and travels as a circle out of most setups, like a donut and the router sits in the hole. So a low mounted router is sending sig into couches and shins and not bounced very well at this xmission height
Directional antenna hacks can do the job but require a ham lic to legally be exchanged if you are hacking the actual router.

So before you buy stuff try a legal tweak check


Put foil glued on cardstock at ~five inches tall bent slightly like a reflecting dish behind your router with concave side aiming master bedroom and mounted at least 6 feet off ground, I bet you get extra bars. We robbed back scatter and shot it forward. You prob don't want a cool foil setup lol this is purchase modeling using craft time.

Same radiation strength different directionality

Open the router mount a patch antenna works as alt (req tech lic)

Buy larger wifi router 3/4 watt off Amazon also easy fix but license is needed in many cases depending on details. Neighbors who use Wi-Fi want only certified work lol

Yea I'm 333 exempted and operate drones you nailed it, the ham license gets you the goodies we run 1.3 ghz on 2000 mw boosters stupid signal, but the tin foil hack will work done it.

There are multiple frequencies that are available, the most common is 2.4g and next to that is 5g. You can buy these deices that can switch between the 2 to try and get the most bandwidth and keep everything going.
As with anything, the more you spend the more reliability of signal and speed or bandwidth you will be able to use.

Also, some have directional antennas which generally create a stronger signal but at limited direction. Ones that aren't directional radiate out from the source in 360* so the range isn't as far but you have a big area with decent reception.

There are lots of ways to accommodate network devices and manage a network these days. The best and fastest is always wired.
 
802.11b - 11 Mbps (2.4GHz)
802.11a - 54 Mbps (5 GHz)
802.11g - 54 Mbps (2.4GHz)
802.11n - 600 Mbps (2.4GHz and 5 GHz) - 150Mbps typical for network adapters, 300Mbps, 450Mbps, and 600Mbps speeds when bonding channels with some routers
802.11ac - 1300+Mbps (5 GHz) - newer standard that uses wider channels, QAM and spatial streams for higher throughput

Actual wireless speeds vary significantly from the above theoretical maximum speeds due to: distance - distance from the access point, as well as any physical obstructions, such as walls, signal-blocking or reflecting materials affect signal propagation and reduce speed interference - other wireless networks and devices in the same frequency in the same area affect performance shared bandwidth - available bandwidth is shared between all users on the same wireless network.
 
That list is a good reference.
Some of the wireless devices will use multiple channels to keep the bandwidth up and signal strength good.
I was pretty surprised at the range of a $50 EnGenius WAP that claims 300 mbps in a building falloff wireless devices and obstructions. I thought for the money they were a nice device. I usually only get to play with more commercial equipment than these but we had a quick need for a cheap and temporary wireless solution for a high res camera (8mp+) and it worked great.
 
I live and die by wireless site surveys we won't set up any access points without them being done on any of our facilities, too many variables, walls, electrical closets, other occupancy access points on the same channel, a controller can only do so much. I agree wired connections are always better.
 
Nothing is more reliable than a wired connection, Wi-Fi is a shared media source if you take into consideration the amount of devices that you have attached to your Wi-Fi router every time you're trying to do something you're literally cutting/parsing bandwidth by the amount of devices you have connected at any one time.
