Overflow Surface area

Is there a specific formula for figuring the best size overflow box for a tank?


My tank is 135G 36x36x24 and the overflow will have a surface skimming area of 24".

I can't imagine you needing more than that, but it is entirely dependent on how much water turnover (GPM of return pump) you want. Remember, the larger the overflow surface area, the slower the water will move through it and vise versa.
