Ozone room treatment

Has anyone here used ozone treatments for rooms that your tanks were in? As in unrelated to the tank, as a one off measure to rid the room of odors.

How did you protect your tank, and was it affected? and how strong and long was the treatment?

Good question. I don’t know for sure, but the units I’ve seen require human and pets to vacate the area during treatment, so I would be leery of trying it. If you do, tent the tank and bring in an outside air source. You can measure ozone in water with a simple DPD low range chlorine test. Then, if you see a rise, you can add sodium thiosulfate (dechlor) to neutralize it.

IMO, these units don’t work well unless you remove the source of the odor. I tried small unit in my car and the smell would just come back.

Yeah the type i would use would be the "dont enter your home at all for the next 24 hours, also take all pets and plants out" type. I guess i could do a test run for an hour or two and measure, I'll have a look around for those tests, thanks. My plan so far is to wrap up the tank in plastic sheeting and have slightly positive pressure via skimmer intake from outside, i just have no idea how aggressively the stuff would dissolve into the water anyway, the skimmer isn't exactly high throughput. maybe i can jus throw an extra few airhoses in there

The "source" if you can call it that is just the wallpaper and walls, nothing i can otherwise feasibly do about them.

Activated carbon is a catalyst that breaks down ozone and its toxic byproducts. That’s what we use on the effluent when running ozone in our aquariums.

No matter what, I would have extra activated in the water, receiving high flow through the media.

I personally don’t predict the air will have a high enough concentration to exceed the doses we use directly in our aquariums for water clarity, but that’s just my guess. In any case, carbon will definitely provide assurance.
