Pale Phyto

Any ideas why two batches of water phyto prepped at the same time would yield a pale batch?

I am thinking I might discard this batch. Both of those are tetra.

What’s your workflow? Were these splits or new starts? Too much light can cause this. Containment like NANNO can do it. No nutrients. Leftover bleach or h2o2 or whatever you use to sterilize can do it. Need more info to help

Either low fertilizer or contamination would be my bet. If the shade of green is different at all or there's any cloudiness that would point towards micro algae and bacterial contamination, respectively. This is assuming parameters are the same (likely of on the same light), but specifically light intensity, temperature, and aeration level.

1. “Pasteurise” saltwater at 141 degrees for 1 hour. Ice bath to cool down to room temp. Alcohol wipes for everything else like work space and tools. These are splits, both from the same batch. Fritz f/2.

All my phyto is subject to the same except rhodomonas, which has its own light that is run significantly dimmer.

I will get it under a microscope when I split tomorrow to see what is going on. Will probably toss that one just to be safe.

Curious what you find. There’s a lot that can cause this. CO2 starvation. Ph crash. Something eating it. This is a strange one.

My phyto does this if it crashes, I just reseed from a much lower amount when it does happen (instead of 32oz I will use 8oz). That being said this usually only happens to me on diatom types

I harvested one and threw away two batches of tetra. The second one was green but had significant green film algae. Im not in short supply so I tossed it. Not sure why but while I didnt see anything other than tetra under the slides, the vasy majority were immobile. I am use to at least 80% of the cells jumping all around. Maybe the slighly colder temps this week played a role.

Either way in 15 days I will split them again and investigate.

The pale batch had no weird smell, and mobility on the slide was roughly 50%. I added some fert as a test to see what happens but I will likely toss that one as well next week.

My tiso batch also had a green film algae atbthe bottom of the bad. So I am expecting Ill need a new starter for that inna couple weeks.
