what do they do? I’ve also had a very bad brown, looking slime algae problem for a while. I can’t seem to get rid of it no matter how many times I clean it.

Bristle worm. Some people hate them, but many consider them a beneficial detrivore. Be careful, they don't call them bristle worms for nothing, they can stick you pretty good and cause painful irritation They come in on rocks or even a frag plug, they are very common hitchhikers. If you have one, you almost certainly have more.
