So I got this Pearlberry frag as a fresh cut last week and it has been doing well. Under med/high light and medium flow, the brown has not changed at all but my question is about the polyp extension. I never have seen the polyps out when the lights are on, but when I turn a flashlight on the tank before bed and when I wake up, as I always do, the polyps are always out. Is there something I'm missing here as far as the care goes? Any advice?

Thanks, I had to jump on it for $25. The brown spot is just from that part of the frag being on the inside of the mother. I also got a tricolor Valida and Blue Hawkins and no extension from the Hawkins either.

I love the striations on this guy! But I've never seen any polyp extension.

My Hawkins also only extends at night. The last time my 210 was in its glory I had very little day time extension from any acropora or millepora but all my corals grew fine. It was either from massive light and flow or a pickin coral beauty. This time around, a couple corals don't extend in the day at all and I dont worry about it. They have awesome color and are growing and that is all that really matters.

hope you have better luck than i have. ive had like....4 frags? lost em all. my fav acro, and hardest to keep alive.

looks like a happy pearlberry to me. that one has never had significant polyp extension during the day in my tanks

Will the brown spot go away? I just think it looks bad since that side is facing the front.

Yes, as that area receives light the pigments will adjust and change to match rest of coral.

Cheers, Todd
