How long does the phyto stay alive? I think you are supposed to refrigerate phyto, but doesn't that kill it?

How long does the phyto stay alive? I think you are supposed to refrigerate phyto, but doesn't that kill it?

Phytoplankton will will stay viable for up to 3 months in the fridge if shaken at least every three days to avoid suffocation from settling according to industry standards. We recommend 4-6 weeks as we see quality decline after this period. While some Phyto doesn’t do well in the colder temps and may not culture well after refrigeration, it remains a valid food source. From our personal experience it maintains the ability to lower nutrients which can only occur if live as it consumes them to reproduce.

Out side of the fridge the shelf live is shortened to 1-3 weeks. In our auto doser, it will remain viable for at least a week. We recommend only adding a weeks worth of Phyto at a time and storing the remainder in the fridge to replenish the reservoir weekly. The mag stirrer keeps it in suspension so no need to shake.

Thank you for the rely. How much should I or what is recommend for a 100 gallon mixed reef?

We recommend 1ml per gallon of actual system volume per day for newer less established tanks. 2ml for heavier established tanks and 3ml for tanks with NPS or lots of filter feeders.
