So my wife and I have a Nikon D5300 that we use for taking photos of our tanks.

I was reading about using flash to help freeze motion for better fish photos.

Could you recommend a flash system for us that doesn't break the bank?

There are a few non Nikon flashes that will work with Nikon as well as with Nikon CLS flash system with full integration and wireless control even with Nikon flashes. They come at a fraction of the nikon flash prices. I had to buy one once on travel when I forgot my flash at home. Build quality of the Nikon flash is a bit better but the performance and control is the same for both and at the price I wouldn't care if it only lasted a year (still working great since 7-8 months)
