Trying to layout my plumbing for my new 220g'ish (180+40G Sump)
Pretty generic layout but I want to plumb my chiller outside the house with a horizontal run of approx 25FT.
Will probably use 1" PVC for this.
Here's what I'm think-
2 return pumps (already have a 1 x Cor20)
-Run the Cor20 almost as a close loop from the sump return via 3/4" back to the DT
-2nd pump will run the manifold as I can "dial in" each device via gate/ball valve and back into the return section on the sump,

Not sure of overall head pressure yet but based on what I've read
  • Filters: Approximately 2 to 4 feet of additional head pressure
  • Chillers: Approximately 2 to 4 feet of additional head pressure
  • UV Sterilizers: Approximately 1 to 2 feet of additional head pressure

500 gph750 gph1000 gph1500 gph
0.5” TubingAdd 0.60/FootAdd 1.40/FootAdd 2.50/FootAdd 5.20/Foot
0.75” TubingAdd 0.15/FootAdd 0.40/FootAdd 0.65/FootAdd 1.40/Foot
1.0” TubingAdd 0.05/FootAdd 0.10/FootAdd 0.20/FootAdd 0.40/Foot
1.5” TubingN/AAdd 0.02/FootAdd 0.03/FootAdd 0.06/Foot
2.0”+ TubingN/AN/AN/AN/A

Using 1K GPH and 1" PVC, to and from the chiller would be 10FT + using the high end calculation of 4FTadditional head pressure from the chiller, that would put me at 14FT
UV = 2FT
Carbon, GFO, ATS @ 4FT ea = 12FT
That puts me at 28FT before any manifold plumbing.
Would like to run a second cor20 as I could swap out incase of a failure...but I don't think with would work in this application.
Suggestions on the lay and or recommended pump??

Thanks

Just an initial reaction. What happens if your two pumps get out of sync? I'm guessing that P1 and P2 are running separately, and the only common point is the water in the sump. P1 acts as a return pump -- standard setup all good. P2 feeding the manifolds and chiller two quick Qs.

1. Where will P2 feed back into? If it's in the same part of the sump as P1 then changes in flow due to P2 will affect water height and maybe (?) trigger your ATO? If you put P2 earlier in the tank -- maybe in the same chamber as your skimmer, and the flow varies it might not be as drastic, but I can still envision water levels changing.

2. Why can't you use one really strong pump that feeds the return to your DT and also your manifold / chiller?

Thanks for the reply @mike550

1. I was thinking Pump 2 would feed back into the the return chamber of the sump or I could run it back to one of the returns of the DT.

2. I thought of that...But any decent pump that large are $$$$ and I'm concern with nose level.
