I just made a DIY pod hotel (not my original idea) for my 40 gal AIO coral frag tank. At night, there are pods of all sizes everywhere so I want to harvest by taking sections and shaking out to add to one of the other displays. My question is:

I used a soldering iron, cleaned off as good as I could get, to melt holes in the plastic box. Is this okay? No bad residues? Is that enough/big enough holes

What's the material on the inside? What's the advantage of this over rock rubble?
