News on friday reported roughly 6.6 million people filed last week alone.

I don't know the national average, but 6.6 million people last week alone tells me quite a few people are laid off, which is in stark contrast to the numbers we are seeing here in our little demographic.

What kind of food? I work for a beef slaughter/packing plant and we have been ramping up production the last month. On the way home from work yesterday the company passed out half ribeye rolls (about 3,600 of them) to everyone that worked the day. (A full roll is right around 15 lbs.) Mid May they are giving every employee a $600 bonus (hazard pay).

I’m thinking we might start slowing down in the next couple weeks. With all of the restaurants being closed or slow the demand isn’t going to be there once the stores get stocked.

Glad to not be laid off.

6.6 million is 3.85 percent of the working population of the us.

Over 16.8 million have filled in the last three weeks. Which is around 10% of US work force. Economists estimate 14.7%+/-2 unemployment rate when factoring gig economy that doesnt get counted in the unemployment rate. Which brings it really close to what is being reported here on R2R. Again you are using r2r to say news is over reporting but we still have a higher rate than the national average on r2r.

As much as you like grilling and smoking meat? I work in shipping so it’s all packaged and boxed in my department.

My wife works for the dairies in the area. (Staff accountant) Says they are having to throw milk away because it can’t get pasteurized before going bad. Illegal to sell non pasteurized milk.

i laid myself off at the end of '18. Theoretically retired. i quit my last job and am not going to look for another. My best to those who have been side slapped by this. Either by working less or more. We must do what we can and a little more. Bless you. Don't feel guilty spending a little more time with the fishes.

I work in a steel mill. We are deemed essential by the federal state department. So even if the state of Ohio says we need to shut down (which is very unlikely), we can stay running because we have authorization from the federal government.

Me personally, I have been working from home. I set up my laptop on the kitchen table and that has been my new office for the last few weeks.

My wife is a nurse in the ER at our local hospital.

Both our jobs are essential.


We started a kitchen remodel before everything went south. Mid March, the day before our Governor essentially shut down our state I finished a complete kitchen tear out. So hear we sit with no kitchen through all this because construction is "non essential..."

We went through almost the same thing but with the bathroom. Order all the stuff to replace the tub and got a quote for it to be installed. Got lucky was able to cancel all the parts $2000 something worth and never ripped anything out.

Healthcare recruiter for correctional facilities.

Hiring is the same or more, especially per diem nurses, but background checks taking longer due to state and federal reductions.

I used to perform exams at the CA state prisons, and they’ve since shut down a lot of healthcare because of COVID. They’re probably one of the safest populations as of right now.

If you click on the view results button, it tells you the results so far in the poll. It’s around 17%. Not easy to gauge the demographic of reef keepers in relation to this situation. It’s an expensive luxury. I’d take a closer look at what people do as a profession. You can see there’s a lot of people on here in health care. They’re all still working. People in the food service industry are generally furloughed or out of work, unless they work in a grocery store. Depending on what state or city you live in, one might be more or less likely to be laid off. If you live in a town that is dependent on tourism, like myself, you might find a much higher percentage than what is expressed in the overall numbers. Of course there’s many more factors one has to consider, but much like a Facebook relationship status, it’s complicated.

I wish. $600 a week on top of unemployment? Please.... I did get 56 hours in this week. That might be equivalent to working zero hours like the non-essential folk are doing.

Nobodies getting an extra 600 a week. At least not yet. That'll probably kick in right when we're all going back to work. But it sounded good and helped trumps approval rating
