Poll: How do you Acclimate your coral?

Ive been going around doing a lot of research and I’ve heard it all. Some people just float the bag to temperature Acclimate, some drip Acclimate, and some don’t do either and just dip their coral and toss it in. I personally just float the bag, dip the coral with the water it came in and my choice of coral dip, then toss it in. How do you Acclimate your coral?

Personally I just dip and toss it in. I've never had an issue doing it this way in the 10 or so years I've had my tank.

That’s pretty awesome! I was thinking that this could open up so many doors for the people who move their tanks with them, like if they go to college with a nano tank and have coral glued to the small aquascape or live rock. It would be interesting to see if there’s any loss from the move if say whatever water the aquascape is in on the trip then filled the rest of the tank up. Obviously there’d be a decent temperature change. That’s what sparked this poll for me atleast

I agree, I think it will be pretty cool to see how a wide range of people do it and find any common similarities with losses or not and find which works and which doesn’t

I just do a close inspection, float the bag and then slowly dump water in over an hour to salinity match.

Temperature float, then just take it out and let it sit for a minute or two to slime up and then place in the tank, so far I've never lost a coral and they start to extend and expand the polyps after a few minutes

i temp acclimate, dip, then toss in.

i used to slowly match parameters, but lost far more coral to this.

I float for 10, do a pretty fast drip for 15, then just scoop water in every couple minutes until the volume in the container has about doubled. Then dip, rinse in a separate container of tank water, and into the tank it goes.

I float for about an hour, pouring in roughly 1/4 cup water every five-ish minutes.

I match the water temp and alk thru drip acclimation in to the QT system. Never in a hurry to introduce issues in to the display system. Had to learn to be patient has only taken 54 years in the hobby thou. Learn acclimation from Steve Tyree good friend of mine who showed me the error of my ways.:)

I have never dipped anything. I add some water from my tank a couple of times and in about 15 minutes, put it in.

Most of my parameters match my 2 local coral guys. Both of these guys are pest free so l am not worried about dipping. l have not bought coral from anyone else to really be worried about pests. l float to temp match for maybe 15min then in the tank they go.

I do overkill, float for 20, drip for 30, dip for AT LEAST 20. One of my lfs have a flatworm problem so I dip longer when I get from that one. I’m paranoid lol

Disclaimer...:D not saying anyones method is wrong or anything, but I am surprised as to how many people here dont dip corals at all. Remember, not saying its wrong, just interesting.

Is it assumed that the float the bag and the drip mean just that and in the tank it goes?

I for one will debate the purchase of a coral based on if i am in the mood to haul out all the buckets and gear to dip them. ;Nurse:p

I’ve certainly considered dipping, I just haven’t officially boarded the wagon yet. Haha

I also trust the places I’m buying from; not saying they can’t ever have a pest, but everything’s so sterile at some of these stores I don’t feel the need to dip the corals myself.

It might come back to bite me in the butt later, but for years luck has been on my side.

I float to temp acclimate since I have to travel several hours back from the fish store. I used to acclimate them after floating them by adding tank water every 4 min to the bag which didn't do any harm but I think it is unnecessary for standard corals, inverts and fish are different IMO. My thought is if I am going to dip, which I always do, the dip procedure is going to stress the corals out more than any slight difference in water parameters so matching water parameters prior to dipping is really a waste of time.

l guess it’s just how much do you trust your supplier. One of my 2 is Adam from battlecorals. l don’t see a need dipping his frags. My other guy does a lengthy QT process before sale. Also not a big issue. With that said if you buy from online or somewhere that don’t have these procedures then l would definitely dip. Flatworms can be the death.

I float for for temp, do a drip for 20 minutes inside a styrofoam container, add revive the last 5 to 10 minutes, depending on the corals.
Disclaimer: I don't think it needs all of that. Some suppliers I don't dip because I trust them, and some thin skinned sps are sensitive to dip.
Some need temperature acclimation and you can put them right in. But my thoughts are that when I place an order, it's hundreds of dollars. Why not pay attention to that addition for an extra 20 or 30 minutes?

I just qt and match temp. Sometimes rinse but not a true dip.
