Hi,

At the moment I am doing some minor plumbing on my new reefer 350. I bought a Spears gate valve to replace the dreaded Red Sea one.

Are there any cons on placing the new valve on the horizontal part of the main downflow pipe instead of on the vertical part? This way I have more space to connect my Clarisea SK3000.

Any opinions?

Thanks!

I wouldn't think it would be a problem. @kschweer or one of the @ReefSquad may have some thoughts.

In theory - when you start the siphon (air in the tubing) you can catch some air in the upside of the horizontal pipe if the gate valve is installed with the flow below the gate. Would not happen if the gate valve is installed upside down or in a 90 degree to the pipe - IMO. Hope you understand what I´m try to say.

Sincerely Lasse

Lasse is right, but the over all issue is, it makes VERY little difference.

Only thing I have ever noticed in gate or ball valves facing downwards is that over time debris start to settle in the valve due to natural gravity pulling down. If the valve is closed for extended period of time or flow is slow, due to debris building up and settling in them, flow comes to a halt.
