Potential Solution for SPS Pests: AEFW, Vermetid Snails, Etc.

For those who have not seen it, a video was posted where Chris Meckley from ACI Aquaculture describes a method he is using to keep AEFW and other SPS pests under control at his coral farm.

In brief, he is dosing into the water volume small amounts of a pulverized fish flake infused with fenbendazole. Fendendazole is traditionally used as a dewormer for fish.



I don’t believe I have a AEFW problem (still trying to diagnose a recent decline in SPS polyp extension) but I am the paranoid type and keep solutions on hand in case problems arise (eg, I have had a box of Interceptor sitting in storage for the last 18 months). This dewormer fish food is not cheap but a little goes a long way it seems. I wanted to post the heads up here in case others wanted to experiment.

I wonder if some of the medicated foods sold could be useful for use in fish and quarantine.

I'm actually going to try these flakes this week waiting on them . But I came across this that I ordered on Amazon called absolute wormer
https://a.co/d/cU0pukRIt is pure flubendazole powder for discus tanks. Now I know this is the same class as fendendazole. 1g of the powder is 50mg per gram. Can't find any info on dosages or if anyone is using this or if it works. I'm thinking it would work but 1g for 120gal according to instructions is for discus. Any thoughts?

After doing much research it was clear that it would not only kill the Sarcothelia, but it would also kill any soft corals that were in the tank including leather and Sinularia corals, Xenia, and Anthelia, as well as hydroids, snails, other mollusks and virtually any kind of worms including bristleworms, vermetid worms and possibly even flatworms. Also, once it is added to a tank, it will dissolve into the live rock and take months to break down and be removed and during this time none of these invertebrates can be added safely.

In my tank I don't have any soft corals but yes invertebrates would die so probably not a good idea thanks

But my question was for flubendazole not fenbendazole.

I imagine it would have a similar affect on inverts, same as Interceptor.

Yea most likely. I've done interceptor a few times works well for red and white bugs also killed monti nudibranches of the dose was high enough. Interceptor did not harm snails. But shrimp and crabs yes
