Our resident achilles tang showing us his signature tear drop orange spot tapering toward its sharp and forward-pointing spine. While there is no evidence of sexual dimorphism for the Achilles tang, there is size dimorphism with females larger than males. And they are known to be monogamous in the wild. This Starcki damsel resides in our display and is a deepwater damsel that is relatively docile. The yellow dorsal part of the body actually darkens under the intense lighting of our reef tank. Anthias are the quintessential reef fish. Pictured is a male lyretail anthia with one of his harem females in the background in our 210g display. If you ever watched an underwater nature show, they are ubiquitous in coral reefs around the world, swimming above coral heads facing into the current feeding on zooplanktons. At a sign of danger they all dart down into the coral heads for cover. All anthias are born females and the dominant female turns into a male, as it did for our male here. The population found in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean has a more vibrant coloration than its counterpart in the Indo Pacific region.
