The HI781 Nitrate Checker HC by Hanna Instruments is a simple and accurate handheld colorimeter that uses the Beer-Lambert principle to determine nitrate concentration. The HI781`s low range of 0.00 - 5.00 makes it ideal for measuring the low nitrate levels found in saltwater aquariums.

Why are Nitrate levels important?
Excess nitrates in a reef system can lead to an overgrowth of undesirable algae and dinoflagellates. Alternatively, not enough nitrates can lead to starvation for SPS and other corals.

There is a dilution method to read up to 50ppm. Per the Hanna site:

For samples containing 0.0 to 50.0 ppm nitrate, follow the dilution procedure.

With the dilution step, like the calcium checker, I have a feeling this will have many users scratching their head.

I also feel 0 to 10ppm would make a better checker.

I'm fine with the dilution step, i have to do it with my calcium reactor on the calcium side already, so not that big of a deal. But prob correct with some of the reefers that don't understand the testing portion of the hobby just yet. wait till they get into the more daunting testing. some of them are like ugh seriously..

I'm cancelling my preorder....I'll stick to Salifert until reviews come out on this. Pretty bummed as I was waiting all summer for this to come out.

Wasn't aware of that. Pricey startup costs but nice it would test alk, cal, no3, and po4.

I only use it for nitrate and phosphate and once figured out it is very user friendly. I use a trident for alk cal mag.

I don't think Hanna got the memo about "low" nitrates being a thing people chased anymore haha :p 0-20ppm would be ideal or even 0-50ppm. I try to raise mine if they are below 5ppm haha.
