Question-primary pump-

How do you know when it is time to replace it-my biggest fear is i don’t realize it dies and lose everything in tank

Do you replace after so many years-wait until it dies?

Depends on the pump.
Is it making noise?
Losing flow?
I always have a spare on hand.
I've had pumps last 15 years or more so, honestly, it really depends.
Understanding your fear here, I'd buy a spare.
Having 2 is cool because I like to clean one-I'll run it through vinegar in a bucket for 2 days while the other one is going.
But mine is easy to change out.
Don't know if I answered your question or not, but if you give me more info on your pump, that'd help.

Have a spare always- even if used.
Output will be reduced and in most cases , a pump simply stops working

You should have power heads in your tank aimed to break the tension of the surface of the water so if you lose the main primary pump your tank should be ok for a few days giving you time to replace it .

I've had two jebao return pumps.
They'll pump a lot of water but what I noticed with mine is they just started losing head pressure after a while. I started mine on 50% and after awhile I was running it full blast.
That being said it made me nervous so I switched back to my eheim, which I have 2 of. Jebao now runs reactor.
Moral of story, buy a backup.
And rarely do you get an I'm ready to fail warning-they usually just stop.
