Pro Reef salt from Turkey

Purely speculation here, but the Turkey buckets say they are made under the authority of TM, meaning it may be a co packer type situation, that’s why people may want the German salt only.

No need for speculation; TM has addressed this very point on one of the many threads here.

Yeah. They should have just gone out and bought a new manufacturing facility and had it built and installed overnight, inside their current facility!

Who knows other than TM, but it might not have been cost. Remember, everyone was moaning and threatening to switch salts as TM Pro was always out of stock. Maybe it was more expensive, but quicker, to get this alternative plant up and running, rather than having to wait for new infrastructure to be built in their German facility.

Or maybe it was cheaper and this was needed to calm those who were complaining that it was getting too expensive. Nobody knows other than TM and everyone throwing stones on these threads are just guessing.

BRS is working with customers on store credit refunds. If you purchased through them email customer service your order numbers along with a picture of the box/bucket.

Tropic Marin published an update today to their Facebook page saying they are working on a recall program for vendors to offer credit/replacements.

“Update regarding our January 27th statement regarding Tropic Marin Pro-Reef sea salt manufactured in our Turkish production facility.

We have confirmed that the issue described in our January 27th only impacts certain batches of Tropic Marin Pro-Reef sea salt manufactured in our Turkish production facility packaged in 100-gallon and 160-gallon boxes and in 200-gallon buckets. The salt produced at our Turkish facility can be identified from our other manufacturing sites, as follows: A label on the front of the 100-gallon and 160-gallon potentially affected boxes states, “Manufactured in Turkey under the authority of Tropic Marin AG”. The 200-gallon buckets have this statement as well on the side of the bucket. We believe the impacted product from our Turkish facility started arriving in the US in April of 2021 and have been sold from then until the current time. We are diligently working to narrow this down further to specific batch numbers.

For the current time, all new salt shipments from Tropic Marin to the US market, will come from one of our German manufacturing facilities. We apologize to anyone who may have received anything but the best from us. We are working on implementing a plan with your retailers, and our distributors, to address the replacement of affected product and will provide updates as soon as practicable.

Sounds like it. I was hoping they would update or confirm their position on the impacts of this salt in our tanks. Last stance they had was this did not have impacts on animals (despite anecdotal observations from users to the contrary).

I think for them it's anecdotal. They need more tested results. Which is horrible to say

I'd highly recommend anyone adversely affected save all receipts and keep detailed journals/logs with as much photo evidence as possible.

I'm really curious when this is all said and done if Tropic Marin will be giving a proper explanation as to how this slipped by its extensive QC. In most cases, simply mixing the salt revealed the issue.

I'm wondering how all the LFS stores are going to handle this... I'm sure many of us purchased locally..

I have a bucket that hasn't been opened yet, waiting to hear back if I can exchange it at my LFS or not.

I’m surprised they want to pay to ship bad salt back. Why not issue a voucher for a free bucket for qualified submissions and dump the bad salt.

If you ordered from BRS you should email customer service anyways and explain that you transferred it from box to bucket. I think a lot of people did this. Find your order number, which should state that it was the 100g box (for example) and I think they'll offer the store credit for you....

TM salt is made in Germany, they should've kept it in Germany.

I just emailed BRS asking essentially exactly that. I bought the 160 gal box because they were out of the buckets in November, and the box was burst and smashed when it arrived. But the bag was unharmed, and I stuffed it into the empty 200 gal bucket. Too bad there isn't a sticker on the bag so you can know one way or the other. I don't have a way to know where it came from, but I can't help but be a bit afraid to use it.
