Probes: Lab grade VS regular..

so guys is it wort spending the extra money for the lab grade probes?

whats the difference in the +ve and -ve range? between the two?

Toxic, after searching around got a couple answers, but take them as you will:

There is no such thing as Lab grade as our hobby defines it. Unsealed probes where the electrode can be replaced are actual "lab grade".

Using the regular probes are just fine and even used by labs themselves.

The official response by Neptune when one asked was:

Hi,Lab grade probes have the following advantages:- Higher quality junction which results in a longer probe lifetime.- Epoxy seal on the tip of the probe. The seal makes the probepressure rated so that it can be mounted in inline fittings.

You can get the lab grade for not much more than the regular. The lab grade ones last quite a bit longer and are more accurate because, IIRC, they use two sensors. This is based off of what I read when someone asked Randy Holmes-Farley the same question.

Basically the rep told be that the difference is that the lab ver will outlast the regular one but he also stated that using a soft tooth brush to clean the head of the probe at least once per month can greatly increase the life of it.

i like brs probes they seem to be lasting a long time.... and seem to stay true longer....

Lab grade is slightly nicer, in the get what you pay for - they can last longer, etc. Personally I just go with the regular, as things tend to get knocked around, etc., and there isn't a significant enough difference between the results to pay for a better probe.

I change them when I can't calibrate them successfully, or when they die. Otherwise, I don't have an age, its not like bulbs.

Would you mind posting where you can get lab grades for not much more than regular? I'm not necessarily convinced of the benefits of lab grade but if it's pretty close in price...

YSI probes are "lab grade" IMO... check their site... That's the standard for national labs and other REAL laboratory and field work done by those that publish their data. Expensive a hell but are awesome and last a long time. Necessary for the hobbyist? Probably not... better than Hanna and Pinpoint? No comparison!
